Making a Good First Impression during an Interview

When meeting someone for the first time, people often form opinions about others during the first 30 seconds. This is exactly what happens during an Interview. The Interviewer sitting right across the table is going to observe your every movement just as you walk in and approach them. Before even you get a chance to speak to them and present yourself vocally, they have created a certain impression in their minds about you. The questions there after during an interview and the approach to conclude is highly influenced by this first impression that they make during that first 30seconds.

Creating a great impression during these first 30seconds is an art that can be learnt by anyone. The three fundamental factors governing the first impression are your appearance, behavior, and attitude. Below are some of the tips to help your build your first impression.

Appearance

  • Dress professionally
  • Use make-up moderately
  • Make sure your hair, mustache and/or beard are well trimmed
  • Don’t overdo use of jewelry
  • Shine your shoes
  • Clean your fingernails
  • Clean your glasses
  • Avoid strong perfumes, colognes, or aftershaves.

Behaviour

  • Carry yourself proudly
  • Use a firm handshake but don’t squeeze an opposite person’s hand
  • Maintain good eye contact
  • Smile and be friendly to everybody
  • Follow the interviewer’s lead
  • Do not overextend the interview
  • Be precise and clear in answers
